Gin Basil Smash

A Little History
The Gin Basil Smash is a modern classic born in Hamburg, Germany, in 2008. Created by bartender Jörg Meyer at Le Lion Bar de Paris, it was inspired by the whiskey sour but given a fresh, herbal twist. With muddled basil, bright lemon, and crisp gin, it instantly became a hit—so much so that it won “Best New Cocktail” at Tales of the Cocktail the very next year.
The drink’s charm lies in its simplicity: garden-fresh, aromatic, and perfect for sipping any time of year. It’s living proof that even in the age of rediscovered vintage cocktails, new icons can still be born.
Ingredients
2 Ounces London Dry Gin
1 Ounce Lemon Juice
0.75 Ounce Simple Syrup (1:1, 50 brix)
8-10 Fresh Basil Leaves
Garnish: Basil Sprig
Method
Muddle the Basil: In a shaker tin, add the basil leaves and simple syrup. Gently muddle to release the bright aromatics, avoiding over-muddling, which can create bitterness.
Mix the Cocktail: Add the gin, fresh lemon juice, and ice to the shaker. Shake vigorously until well chilled and combined.
Strain: Double strain the mixture into a rocks glass over fresh ice to keep the drink smooth and free of basil bits.
Garnish: Top with a fresh basil sprig for aroma and presentation.
Serve and enjoy.
